Paraguayan soccer player Salvador Cabanas is in serious condition at a hospital in Mexico City after been shot in the head early Monday, Miguel Angel Mancera, the city's attorney general told Mexico's Primero Noticias news.

Cabanas, 29 was conscious when he was taken to the hospital, the President of club America, Michel Bauer told the news denying reports that the player had suffered brain death. Cabanas underwent a surgery Monday morning to extract the bullet but there were no reports of the outcome, according to the news.

Cabanas' wife, who was at the hospital, also reached the public to pray for her husband. I would like to ask people to pray for him, because he is in very serious condition, Maria Alonso Mena told radio Uno just few hours after her husband was shot.

Cabanas was reportedly shot at a bar's restroom in Mexico City early Monday where he was with his wife and friends. It is not confirmed what was the cause of the shooting but it seems Cabanas was been robbed, Bauer told Primero Noticias.

Three people were arrested after the incident, according to Mancera.

Cabanas has been acknowledged as America's best player. He was a key player for Paraguay's national team to classify to South Africa's world cup this year.

In Mexico, Cabanas and goal keeper Guillermo Ochoa, are the main figures of club America.
