Police in Brownsville, Tex. shot and killed an 8th grade student who brought a gun into school, according to the Brownsville Herald. The shooting, which occurred at Cummings Middle School, happened after the suspect engaged police, the Herald reported.  It was not clear if the student opened fire, however.

USA Today reported that a school administrator notice the boy with a gun and called police.  Detective J.J. Trevino told the Associated Press It's still under investigation, as far as how he came about to bringing the weapon or if he encountered anybody or anything else.

Police came across the boy in the hallway and ordered him to put the weapon down. When he refused, police shot him three times. He died after being taken to a hospital.

Students were taken to another school while Cummings Middle School was on lock down.
