Craft beer is exploding in popularity and more breweries are popping up in every state in America. Each state and brewer offers its own variations and twists on classic suds. California is the capital of craft beer in the U.S., with 431 breweries and a $4.7 billion economic impact. The state produced more than 3.4 million barrels of craft beer in 2014, making it second in production, according to the Brewers Association.

Nationally, craft beer sales increased 17.6 percent in 2014 and is a $19.6 billion market. Craft beer production also increased in 2014, up 18 percent, according to the Brewers Association. With billions of gallons of craft beer being produced annually, more beer drinkers are preferring to expand their drinking habits. Even better in the craft beer business is the healthy growth of the industry. The gap between capacity and production is at a normal ratio, and there seems to be no shortage of demand. For younger drinkers, 21 to 34 years of age, going local is most important when it comes to choosing beer, according to a recent Nielsen study.

California has the most craft breweries in the U.S. -- among them, Anchor Brewing, Bear Republic Brewing, Hangar 24 Craft Brewery and Eagle Rock Brewery. The state ranks first in economic impact ($4.7 billion) and second in production (3.4 million barrels). Washington ranks second with 256 breweries, followed by Colorado (235 breweries), Oregon (216 breweries) and New York (151 breweries). Only Pennsylvania tops California in terms of production, with 4 million barrels produced a year.

California is a big state with plenty of people, which explains why there are hundreds of breweries. In terms of states that love their beer, look at Oregon and Vermont. They are ranked first and second in breweries per capita -- meaning the number of businesses per 1,000 adults that are 21 and over. Oregon also ranks first in economic impact per capita, with Colorado second. If you want the most beer, Vermont's production equals 16.2 gallons per 21-plus adults. As for which state drinks the most beer, North Dakota reigns supreme.
