The "Game of Thrones" Season 5 premiere featured a shocking death. HBO

The "Game of Thrones" Season 5 premiere is here, and "The Wars to Come" surprised fans with another shocking death. Killing off a character is nothing new for the show, but it happened to a character who was still presumed to be alive in "A Song of Ice and Fire." Another difference between the show and the novels involved Maggy the Frog's prophecy, Tyrion's journey and Sansa Stark's storyline.

Warning: Full "Game of Thrones" and "A Song of Ice and Fire" spoilers ahead.

The Season 5 premiere featured many changes to "ASOIAF" to streamline the action. Set photos and trailers set up Tyrion in Pentos and Meereen, which means his storyline will be sped up for the season. In "A Dance with Dragons," Tyrion has arrived in Pentos and learns of Daenerys from Illyrio. He is later captured by Jorah Mormont and while waiting to board a boat to Volantis meets Penny. The trio is captured by slavers and more unfortunate stuff happens to Tyrion. By the time "Dragons" ends, Tyrion has yet to meet Daenerys and tries to persuade the Second Sons to fight for her.

Mance Rayder's Death

Mance dies in the "Game of Thrones" Season 5 premiere, but he is presumed to be alive in "ASOIAF." In the novels, Mance is captured, but Melisandre spares his life and transforms Rattleshirt to take his place. Rattleshirt is burned and the newly transformed Mance lives. In a quest to save Arya from the Boltons, Melisandre tells Jon of her plan, and Mance is sent to Winterfell to rescue her. After a few nights and several deaths, Mance and his spearwives -- along with Theon/Reek -- are about to escape before the fake Arya gives up their location.

Mance's fate is revealed in the "Pink Letter," which says Stannis was killed and Mance is currently imprisoned, his only source of warmth a cloak made from the skin of his six wives. Mance's story in "ASOIAF" also includes a baby, but that part changed in "Game of Thrones" Season 4.

Maggy The Frog's Prophecy

The series' first flashback took place in the Season 5 premiere, but there was one major change to Maggy the Frog's prophecy. "And when your tears have drowned you, the valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you," Maggy says at the end of meeting with Cersei. There's plenty of speculation about what this line means, but it could explain why Cersei hates Tyrion. Valonqar means "little brother" in High Valyrian. Other theories speculate that Jaime or Stannis could kill Cersei.

Sansa Stark

Sansa's storyline is following the general arc in "ASOIAF." Efficiency again calls for some aspects of Sansa's learning to rule being cut from the show. The series established her as a capable and savvy student under Littlefinger, and her transformation was made clear in the Season 4 finale.

Perhaps the biggest change will involve a potential meeting with Brienne. In "ASOIAF," Brienne is still looking for Sansa, and Cersei wants to have her killed. The "Game of Thrones" Season 5 premiere teased a potential encounter, and it's likely it will be a major plotline in the early season.
