Irish singer-songwriter-guitar player Andrew Hozier-Byrne -- better known as Hozier -- has had quite the year. "Take Me to Church" has been a radio hit, and it has more than 260 million plays on Spotify and more than 154 million views on YouTube. He also performed the single and sang "I Put a Spell On You," a duet with Annie Lenox, at the Grammys. And on Sunday at Hammerstein Ballroom, Hozier proved that his success goes well beyond just one song.

Hozier is backed by a full band that includes a drummer, two backup singers, a cellist and keyboard player. The songs on his self-titled album are polished, but they don't quite capture the sense of purpose or urgency that they do in concert. Hozier's set started with "Angel of Small Death and the Codeine Scene," and the chorus booms to life with the additional vocal support while his guitar gets pushed forward in the mix.

Hozier proved to be as interesting onstage as he comes across in interviews. Despite calling himself an introvert in an interview with the Telegraph, Hozier has plenty to say in his music that's rooted in the blues.

Hozier's main set closed with "Take Me to Church," a song that tackles gay rights and oppressive institutions -- not bad for a four-minute single -- but he had one more surprise for the encore with a cover of Ariana Grande's "Problem."
