The Martian
"The Martian" may be the best movie to feature the red planet. 20th Century Fox

"The Martian," starring Matt Damon, has earned more than $100 million globally in its first week of release. Helped by NASA's announcement the same week, about water found on Mars, the film has led to renewed interest in the red planet. The same can't be said for most other Martian movies we've seen through the years.

Burger Fiction created a video containing 24 movies that featured the red planet. Some films -- such as "Mars Attacks!" -- are set on Earth, but many take advantage of the red planet's alien landscape to tell tales of danger and action. From comedy to sci-fi to animated family features, Martian movies cover a wide range of genres, but as for the quality of those films -- well, let's just say Mars has rarely starred in a great movie.

Of the movies that have ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, "My Favorite Martian" is the worst Mars movie. The film, starring Christopher Lloyd and Dennis Quaid, had a score of 12 percent rotten. "Red Planet" -- starring Val Kilmer, Carrie-Ann Moss and Benjamin Bratt -- was not too far behind at 14 percent. Other notable disappointments include "Doom" (19 percent), "John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars" (21 percent), "RocketMan" (24 percent) and "Mission to Mars" (25 percent). "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" (25 percent) is a movie that's so bad it's good.

"The Martian" has the best Rotten Tomatoes at 93 percent. "Mars" (86 percent) and the original "Total Recall" (84 percent) were also critically acclaimed Martian features.
