Ribbit announced a new technology platform on Monday that will eventually let web users make phone calls to any land line, mobile phone or other web browser, without the need for downloading additional software.

The Silicon Valley startup's Ribbit SmartSwitch platform will let website developers add telephone features to any web page or web-based services. The platform includes a complete telephone switchboard that connects the Internet to any public-switched telephone network.

Users of the services will also be able to call any internet telephony software running on PCs, desktop widgets, social networking applications, Flash-based phones and even web browsers.

We want developers to be able to use telephony to make money, says Ted Griggs, the CEO of Ribbit on their website. There's no door closed on this API for them. They have access to the guts of everything.
