A mega solar project in San Francisco that will generate 5 megawatts of clean energy - enough to power 1,000 common households - was approved by the city's board of supervisors.

If the project is completed, it will become the largest municipal solar project in the U.S. because instead of powering homes it will supply electricity to municipal properties such as schools and government offices.

The developer, Recurrent Energy, will install more than 25,000 solar panels beginning this summer and is expected to complete construction by 2010.
