New year, new drama! “Shameless” will be returning with more shenanigans when Season 5 of the Showtime series airs its premiere installment Sunday, Jan. 11. And according to the synopsis of episode 1, viewers are in for one heck of an organic treat.
The summary teases that when Lip (Jeremy Allen White) returns home from college, he’ll struggle to fit in with his Southside peers once again. But he won’t be the only thing that sticks out in the hood like a sore thumb. The Gallagher’s neighborhood is transforming into a trendy location with the grand openings of new yoga studios, gastro bars, and organic coffee shops. Not to mention, Southside residents are being bribed out of their homes by realtors with wads of money.
From a recently released promo video, we know Frank (William H. Macy) is pretty peeved over the cultural transitioning of his town.
“It’s the decline of civilization as we know it,” he says in the Season 5 trailer.
The Gallagher patriarch, who is still recovering from his liver transplant, decides to concoct a plan (with a little help from his kids) to show the newcomers “what the hood is really like.” Part of his plan consists shooting down the new businesses while the other half involves competing head-to-head with the hoity-toity stores.
“Frank unveils his project, a home brewery, in which he makes ‘Frank’s Milk of the Gods,’ the self-proclaimed strongest beer known to man,” the synopsis revealed.
The remainder of the synopsis divulges what the other characters have been up to since we last saw them. Ian (Cameron Monaghan) is helping take care of Mickey’s (Noel Fisher) child and pregnant wife. The Gallagher's neighbor Kevin (Steve Howey) will play the role of a stay-at-home dad as Vee (Shanola Hampton) goes to work at The Alibi.
Fiona (Emmy Rossum) will also be rolling up her sleeves in Season 5 as she works at Patsy’s. But she’ll get a bigger workload than she bargained for when the mystery woman who appeared with Jimmy (Justin Chatwin) in the Season 4 finale shows up at the restaurant.
Season 5, episode 1 of "Shameless" airs Sunday, Jan. 11, at 9 p.m. EST.
