The shuttle's four member crew embarked on the 12-day mission to the International Space Station this morning. The shuttle launched on time today at 11:26 EST, despite weather concerns, and was broadcast live from NASA TV.

Spectators came out in the very early morning to claim as spot to watch the live launch of space shuttle Atlantis, STS-135. NASA estimated as many as 1 million people gathered to watch Atlantis lift off into space. The shuttle took off from Kennedy Space Center, and viewers camped out at Jetty Park in Cape Canaveral, Florida, to watch the show!

The journey has been a sentimental one for NASA as today marks the 135th and final launch after 30 years for NASA's space shuttle program.
