“Saturday Night Live” returned to NBC with a strong start. Of course, the presidential debate was the focus of last night’s cold open, and it was Jim Carrey’s debut as former Vice President Joe Biden. The 13-minute sketch addressed the massive amount of news from the last few days.

The “SNL” cold open, which was the first skit of the Season 46 premiere, kicked off with an intro, stating that this was a replay of Tuesday’s debate “even though Tuesday feels like 100 years ago.” They also acknowledge that this could be the only presidential debate.

Chris Wallace (Beck Bennett) moderates the debate between President Donald Trump (Alec Baldwin) and former Vice President Joe Biden (Jim Carrey), and it goes off the rails immediately.

A few highlights from the cold open sketch:

  • While Biden pauses to listen to his Harry Styles meditation tape (featuring a surprise cameo from the “Watermelon Sugar” singer), Trump listens to Kimberly Guilfoyle's Republican National Convention speech.
  • Trump using a laser pointer to distract Biden.
  • Kamala Harris (Emmy winner Maya Rudolph) coming in as Biden’s mother figure and telling the audience that America needs a “WAP,” a woman as president. “For now, I’ll settle for HVPIC, head vice president in charge.”
  • Biden taking out a remote to literally mute Trump. “Let’s bask in the Trump-less-ness,” he says.
  • “Now just imagine if science and karma somehow teamed up to send us a message about just how dangerous this virus can be,” Biden says with a pointed look towards Trump, clearly referencing the President’s COVID-19 diagnosis. “I’m not saying I want it to happen, but just imagine if it did.”
  • Biden’s new slogan: “Make America not actively on fire again.”
