Bell Gardens, California, Mayor Daniel Crespo was fatally shot Tuesday, allegedly by his wife, the Los Angeles Times reported. The incident occurred at his home at about 3:35 p.m. in the 6300 block of East Gage Avenue, Bell Gardens police said.

Crespo, 45, and wife Levette, 43, got into an argument, Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Nicole Nishida said. When their 19-year-old son intervened, Crespo and his son began to physically fight. That's when Crespo’s wife allegedly got a gun and shot the mayor, Nishida said. He was shot multiple times in the torso, KTLA 5 added.

Crespo was alive when he was brought to the hospital. Officials confirmed he died at 5 p.m., CBS Local Los Angeles wrote.

Crespo’s wife is in police custody, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Crespo was elected to the Bell Gardens City Council in 2001, the news site wrote. Bell Gardens is about 10 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.

Los Angeles County CEO Bill Fujioka wrote on Twitter that he was “thinking about” Crespo after the mayor's death.
