Washington sportscaster, George Michael, died Thursday following complications of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, the Associated Press reported.

Michael worked in radio and television for over 40 years and worked at the sports desk at the NBC affiliate in Washington, D.C., from 1980 to 2007.

In a statement, WRC TV in Washington, where Michael had been a sports director, called him a pioneer in sports broadcasting.
