On Monday 230,000 Kenyan teachers went on strike following a wage dispute with government.

George Wesonga, who heads the Kenya National Union of Teachers, said lessons were cancelled in most of the country's 18 063 public primary schools after 230 000 teachers refused to teach.

Ministry of Education statistics show there are 8.2 million primary school students nationwide.

The union and government had agreed on an increase in teachers salary from $130 t0 $176.

Teachers fear that the wage increase is not enough to cover the increasing inflation.
