True Detective
Ani Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams) will have to take back control of the Ben Caspere investigation after Ray Velcoro's (Colin Farrell, not pictured) shooting in episode 3 of "True Detective" Season 2. HBO

Episode 2 of “True Detective” Season 2 ended with a bang – literally. The HBO series’ sophomore run ended Sunday’s “Night Finds You” with a whopper of a cliffhanger. Following a lead from mobster Frank Semyon (Vince Vaughn), Ray Velcoro (Colin Farrell) checked out the house where the murdered Ben Caspere allegedly sought underage prostitutes, only to find a mystery gunman who left him lying on the ground with two shotgun blasts in his torso. What will happen in episode 3, “Maybe Tomorrow”?

Well, according to the synopsis, Velcoro will not be dead, as many viewers feared. The synopsis for the new episode reveals that Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams) will not be happy about the rogue behavior that got Velcoro shot. She will be angry with the reprobate detective and eager to set him straight and take control of the investigation.

Meanwhile, Frank, who sent Velcoro on the errand that put him in danger – perhaps intentionally following the detective’s threat to stop working for the gangster – will still be trying to solve the case on his own terms. In episode 5 he will reach out to his criminal underworld colleagues for help. However, he might find that his former associates no longer want to work with him after everything that has happened.

Plus, the promo reveals, that Paul Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch) will get more involved in the investigation after sitting out of most of the action in episode 2. The teaser shows him questioning the Vinci mayor’s wife with Bezzerides and bumping into Semyon at bar in an exchange that appears far from friendly.

What will be the fallout from Velcoro’s shooting? Fans will have to wait to find out. “True Detective” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. EDT on HBO.
