Verizon Wireless announced Tuesday plans to allow its customers to freely use mobile devices and software from other companies by the year 2008.

This plan will see Verizon customers being able to activate any compatible device on the Verizon Wireless network.

Many companies and consumer groups for a long time have been calling for wireless providers to open up their networks to outside devices and software.

Verizon Wireless President and CEO, Lowell McAdam said the company's new policy any apps, any device is a major change, noting that its customers wanted a choice that had full service phones and applications.

This is a transformation point in the 20-year history of mass market wireless devices one which we believe will set the table for the next level of innovation and growth, said McAdam. Verizon Wireless is not changing our successful retail model, but rather adding an additional retail option for customers looking for a different wireless experience.
