Today's books video is a feature piece on John A. Calhoun, who founded and ran the National Crime Prevention Council for 20 years, and is now a senior consultant for the Justice Department for its National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention.

He is also the author of Through the Hourglass: Poems of Life and Love (Bartleby, Feb. 1, 94 pages, $16.95).

When I get time, often on airplanes, I write poems, he says.

The book is what the unidentified video narrator describes as a somewhat accidental collection of personal poems that capture the common experiences of life, including courting, kids, and grandchildren.
