Stocks fell for a fourth straight session on Monday as the lack of progress in dealing with heavy debt and shrinking revenues both in the United States and Europe sapped investor confidence in equities.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> dropped 248.09 points, or 2.10 percent, to 11,548.07, according to the latest available figures. The S&P 500 <.SPX> fell 22.60 points, or 1.86 percent, to 1,193.05. The Nasdaq Composite <.IXIC> lost 49.36 points, or 1.92 percent, to 2,523.14.
