Whirlpool Corp , the world's largest appliance maker, slashed its profit forecast for the year and said it would cut 5,000 jobs, citing a weak global economic environment.

The maker of Maytag and KitchenAid appliances, which also reported lower-than-expected quarterly results, now expects a full-year profit of $4.75-$5.25 a share, compared with its previous estimate at the low-end of $7.25-$8.25 a share.
