After nearly a year of speculation that Aaron Rodgers might be traded, the four-time NFL MVP is sticking with the Green Bay Packers. News broke Tuesday that the quarterback has decided to return to Green Bay for the 2022 season and beyond, on the verge of signing a multi-year contract.

Pat McAfee first reported that Rodgers planned to stay with the Packers, noting that the quarterback is working on signing a cap-friendly deal. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Rodgers will sign a four-year, $200 million contract.

It had been reported that the Packers were willing to make Rodgers the highest-paid player in NFL history in order to secure a commitment from the veteran. A yearly salary of $50 million would put Rodgers well ahead of Patrick Mahomes, who is signed to a historic contract with an average annual value of $45 million.

The contract signed by Rodgers is expected to lower his cap number for the 2022 season. Doing so could help Green Bay retain other key players. Wide receiver Davante Adams is expected to stay with the Packers on the $20 million franchise tag.

Previously set to become a free agent next year, Rodgers’ last contract paid him an average salary of $33.5 million.

At 38 years old, Rodgers’ new contract could keep him under center for the Packers beyond his 40th birthday. The quarterback shows no signs of slowing down, winning the NFL MVP award in back-to-back seasons. The Packers have won 13 games in three consecutive years.

Rodgers reportedly considered retirement or requesting a trade to the Denver Broncos.
