  • Liverpool defeated Brentford 3-0 Sunday
  • Oxlade-Chamberlain scored Liverpool's second goal
  • He sustained an ankle issue in the second half

Jurgen Klopp has provided an injury update on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who suffered an ankle issue during Liverpool FC’s 3-0 win over Brentford in the Premier League on Sunday.

Oxlade-Chamberlain doubled Liverpool’s lead in the 69th minute before picking up the injury while running in the penalty area a few minutes later. He was substituted by Takumi Minamino, who went on to net Liverpool’s third goal. Earlier, midfielder Fabinho opened the scoring with his 44th-minute header.

"He rolled his ankle and now we hope it’s nothing serious but we will get the further – or final – information [at the] earliest tomorrow, that’s how it is [with] these situations. It’s absolutely too early [to say], I have no idea. I don’t know. Unfortunately, that’s his life and especially the life of a footballer. He did absolutely nothing wrong, it just happened," Klopp was quoted by Liverpool media, as saying in a post-match interview.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has scored two goals in 25 competitive appearances for Liverpool in the ongoing campaign. He has also provided two assists. While he has been in the match-day squad for 20 league games this season, he has played in 15 of those, starting only seven.

"This is nothing to do with Alex, it could have happened to anyone. It would have been really average for everybody, so let’s wait for it. We don’t know anything about it [yet], so we have to wait and so you have to wait," added Klopp in the same interview.

The latest win over Brentford took Liverpool to second place in the 2021-22 Premier League table. The Reds now have 45 points from 21 matches and a game in hand. They are 11 points behind table-toppers Manchester City and two points ahead of third-placed Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has said his side cannot focus on the gap from Manchester City.

"We can’t focus on Man City. Man City are one of the best teams in Premier League history and they’ve shown that especially over the last six or seven weeks, they’ve just been winning 1-0s, 2-1s and just been doing enough to win games. That’s what wins you championships. Maybe we’ve struggled a little bit at that recently, giving away leads and things like that. But all we can do is focus on ourselves, focus on each game we play and try to, if they do slip up, we have to be ready to close the gap," Robertson told Liverpool's official website on Sunday.
