KEY POINTS

  • The New York Mets are the ideal location for Bartolo Colon in his last year in the MLB
  • Colon has been one of the more iconic players in the league since his debut in 1997
  • The veteran pitcher turns 47 this month

One of the more popular figures in the MLB today is veteran pitcher Bartolo Colon. The four-time All-Star has tallied quite a career in the league and is ready to suit up for one more year.

It has been reported that the New York Mets are in a position to land the iconic player. Throughout his career, Big Sexy as he is fondly called has bounced around several teams across the MLB. But his recent stint with the Mets during 2014-2016 has left a resounding impact on him.

Per Yahoo Sports, Colon rekindled good memories of his stint with the Mets organization.

"That Mets team was really something special," Colon said.

"I've played with 10 teams, but with the Mets, the way all those players treated me, how that entire franchise treated me, from the front office to the kitchen staff, it was amazing,” Colon added.

Coming out of the Dominican Republic, Colon started out as a threat with incredible speed in his pitches. While Colon was known for his incredible arm in his earlier days with the league, he is now relied upon as a control pitcher. Despite having a physique that doesn’t fit the stereotype for a professional athlete, the former Cy Young winner is an incredible player who plays with a calm disposition.

The longevity of his career can be attributed to how much he’s having fun on the field. There have been multiple occasions where Colon has been the center of light and cherished moments. These include entertaining times in New York as Colon remembers his connection with the Mets fans.

“And Mets fans are the best. In the beginning, when they laughed at me every time my helmet fell off, at first I felt uncomfortable. But when I saw how much the fans enjoyed it, I asked for a bigger batting helmet so that it would fall more because it was so much fun for them!"

Ever since Colon’s debut in 1997 with the Cleveland Indians, he has been in a total of 565 games, starting in 552 of them. The experienced pitcher will turn 47 in a few weeks and is looking forward to continuing to play in the league.
