• 49ers coach confirms Jimmy Garoppolo will remain as the main quarterback
  • Trey Lance has yet to sign a rookie contract with the 49ers
  • Lance may take over if Garoppolo struggles this coming season

Kyle Shanahan has made it clear that Jimmy Garoppolo will remain as the San Francisco 49ers' starting quarterback for now.

Hence, this should put a stop to rumors suggesting that Trey Lance will be starting for the Niners this coming NFL season.

In a report from the Associated Press, Shanahan pointed out that "there is no open competition" for the Niners starting quarterback job.

”There’s no open competition right now in terms of getting equal reps with the same group,” he stated. “Jimmy is coming in as the [No.] 1 and Trey is coming in as the 2.”

Garoppolo has proven to be reliable but on the premise that he stays healthy. This has been the factor that has raised questions on his tenure with the 49ers.

But for as long as he is healthy, Shanahan stressed that no one can just come to the team and take away that starting quarterback role from the two-time Super Bowl champion.

“Jimmy’s a very good player,” Shanahan said. “And when Jimmy’s at the top of his game, I told him this back when we made the trade: ‘There’s no rookie that’s going to just come in here right away and take your job if you’re at the top of your game.'”

It would be best to note that Lance has yet to sign a rookie contract with San Francisco.

It could be the reason why the 21-year-old is unable to practice, ProFootballTalk reported.

Either way, that could be a small setback for the 49ers. Garoppolo may stay on as the team’s starting QB, but there is no question that Lance is the player of the future.

NFL insider Matt Maiocco stressed this when he appeared on the Sports For All PH podcast with Filipino journalists Vincent Juico and Brian Yalung.

Maiocco explained that it will only be a matter of time before Lance takes over from Garoppolo.

“It’s going to be Trey Lance. It’s just a matter of when they make that decision when to go with Trey Lance over Jimmy Garoppolo. It could be at the start of the season although that’s kind of unlikely. It could be at some point during the season if Garoppolo struggles or the team starts losing some games. It could be at the end of the season,” Maiocco stated.
