KEY POINTS

  • Manchester United will take on Young Boys in UCL on Wednesday
  • Red Devils are at the top of Group F in the UCL
  • Van de Beek and Dean Henderson will start against Young Boys

Nemanja Matic will lead Manchester United in their upcoming clash with Young Boys in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

Manchester United head coach Ralf Rangnick confirmed the news regarding Matic in a pre-match conference Tuesday. He suggested that the club skipper Harry Maguire may be rested for the game against Young Boys. The Red Devils have already sealed a place at the top of Group F with 10 points from five matches.

This has also hinted that Bruno Fernandes, who is usually given the captain's armband in Maguire's absence, may not start against the Swiss club Wednesday. Donny van de Beek and goalkeeper Dean Henderson will feature in Manchester United's starting XI, Rangnick revealed in the conference.

This is not the first time Matic will lead Manchester United. Back in September, the Serbian captained the side during the League Cup third-round tie with West Ham United under the management of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

"That was not even a dream because, when you start from a small village in Serbia, when you play for a team that has only one ball for one year and you just play with one ball. I was dreaming of maybe playing in the Serbian division, maybe Red Star Belgrade, but I am at Manchester United. It is kind of a dream. I am very proud because of that and, for sure, I take all the armbands to my home and that one will be framed," Matic said in the pre-match conference, Man Utd's official website reported.

The Man Utd boss also provided an update about injured Edinson Cavani and Raphael Varane. The German boss said the duo trained with the team Tuesday but won't play against Young Boys.

"They both cannot play tomorrow but they were part of the training session today, Edi even yesterday, for Rapha it was the first time he was on the pitch together with the team. If everything goes well I expect both of them back in full training next week, hopefully, Monday next week they will be participating in all training sessions. It would be great to have both players available as soon as possible but as I said, if possible, for the rest of the season," added Rangnick.

From five group games in the Champions League, Manchester United have won three, drew one and lost one. Following this fixture, the Red Devils will take on Norwich City in an away Premier League game on Saturday.
