KEY POINTS

  • Red Devils may have diverted interest to other players
  • Chelsea raises chances of getting Sancho
  • Manchester United may recall former players

Manchester United was in hot pursuit of Jadon Sancho of Dortmund Borussia, but the coronavirus may have just doused water on their intent. Identified as one of the key targets by the Red Devils, the 20-year-old is reportedly interested in joining the team if they are guaranteed Champions League champions.

According to The Sun, this is what it may take for United to finally get their hands on the English footballer. Before league play was halted, Barca was at fight place of the Premier League table and were behind Chelsea and Liverpool -- ironically two other teams targeting Sancho. Manchester City and Leicester City are also ahead of the Red Devils, occupying the top three spots together with Liverpool.

With United in fifth place, that could satisfy the alleged requirement of Sancho. But then again, the 20-year-old wants to join a team with better performance and winning titles. If that were the case, the winger could be better of listening to Chelsea or Liverpool.

Beyond the standings, an even bigger mess looms over the horizon. If league officials are forced to scrap the season, it would mean United and the rest would have to start from scratch. This means the Red Devils will have to work their way up again from the Europa League.

Another complication is Manchester City. Though they have been meted a two-year Champions League ban, an appeal is likely to be filed. If that ends up being granted, it places Man Utd. in an even bigger hole and likely snuffs all hopes of getting Sancho to the fold.

This could pave the way for Chelsea to step in and hold contract talks with Sancho. Joining a team performing better under the watch of Frank Lampard could be an appealing one for the 20-year-old booter. Lampard has been giving younger players a chance to play and it could be the opportunity for Sancho to rise among the ranks.

As for United, filling up holes in the team may need to be expanded. Passing up on Sancho could open a return for Alexis Sanchez who is currently on loan to Inter Milan. Aside from him, there are also rumors of the Red Devils considering former players Wilfried Zaha or Memphis Depay if they fall short of Sancho, Football London reported. Man Utd. has options but their next moves may hinge on how things are after the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic.
