Tokyo will host the 2020 Summer Olympics, the International Olympic Committee announced in Buenos Aires Saturday after two rounds of voting eliminated contenders Istanbul and Madrid.

Tokyo bested Istanbul by a 60-36 vote in the second round, with Madrid having been eliminated in the first round following a tie-breaker with Istanbul. The Japanese capital last hosted the Summer Olympics in 1964.

“Congratulations to the city of Tokyo on its election as host of the 2020 Olympic Games,” outgoing IOC President Jacques Rogge said in a statement. “Tokyo presented a very strong technical bid from the outset -- and it needed to in competition with two such high-caliber bids from Istanbul and Madrid.”
