The strike exercise comes amid growing tensions in the Korean Peninsula over North Korea’s nuclear arms and ballistic missile programs.

Earlier this month, North Korea pledged to strengthen its nuclear arsenal if "the U.S. and its followers continue their hostile acts against us."

According to reports, Pyongyang is seeking to complete the development of a nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the U.S. mainland. However, President Donald Trump vowed to retaliate with "fire and fury" if North Korea continues with its provocations.

According to CNN, North Korean government officials told CNN’s Will Ripley in Pyongyang last week that the U.S. was progressively taking more action that could lead to another Korean War.

"Nobody knows when and how the 'war maniac' Trump will ignite the 'wick of war,'" the officials said, referring to the carrier strike operation near the North Korean peninsula.

The carrier-strike drills will take place till Nov. 14.
