During a taped interview on CBS TV show The Doctors, Thomas Beatie, who is famously dubbed Pregnant Man, revealed that he and his wife, Nancy, are currently separated.
Like all marriages, we have our ups and downs, and we're going through a rough patch right now, Beatie admitted on the talk show. At the moment, we're separated.
The separation had apparently come at the time of Beatie's major gender-switch surgery. Nancy hasn't seen the new me yet, he said on the show which will air Monday.
It appears that Beatie has not disclosed any further details on the breakup. Neither has he commented on whether the separation will be made permanent or over the custody of the couple's three children.
According to the report, Beatie, 38, rose to fame when he became the first man to have successfully delivered a child in 2008. Born in Hawaii as Tracy Lagondino, Beatie retained his female reproductive parts and underwent artificial insemination in order to be able to have children. Shortly after that, Beatie and his 49-year old wife have gone on to have two more children - Austin, who was born in 2009, and Jensen, who was born in the following year.
Nancy, who already has two teenage children from a previous relationship, is unable to bear children following a hysterectomy procedure she had over a decade back, the publication said.
Prior to delivery of the couple's first child Susan, Beatie posed for a highly controversial shot of him pregnant, thereby igniting a media frenzy all over the world. Beatie till date is a target for several orthodox groups, and has admitted that the family has faced tremendous stress including financial difficulties as a result of the pregnancy costs, surgeries and hormone treatments.
We are a man, woman and child. It's ironic that we are so different but yet, we're just a family, just the same as anyone else, Beatie told ABC News's Barbara Walters back in 2008.
