$400 Million Powerball Winner: Winning Ticket For September 18 Powerball Drawing Sold In Lexington, South Carolina

The single winning ticket for Wednesday night’s $400 million Powerball jackpot was purchased in Lexington, S.C.

An unidentified Powerball player correctly selected Wednesday night’s winning numbers of 7, 10, 22, 32, 35, and a Powerball of 19, NBC News reports. The Lexington, S.C., resident will have the option of a lump sum payment worth $223 million—about $134 million after taxes—or a 30-year annuity of the full amount of the jackpot.

South Carolina Educational Lottery Executive Director Paula Harper Bethea confirmed on Thursday that the winning Powerball ticket was sold in Lexington, NBC News reports. The ticket was reportedly purchased at a Murphy USA convenience store. Lexington has about 20,000 residents.

Local lottery officials recommended that the owner of the winning Powerball ticket "sign the back of the ticket, put it in a safe location, seek financial or legal advice from a trusted source, and then come forward to claim the ticket,” NBC News reports.

Powerball winners have 180 days from the day of the drawing to come forward before the state of South Carolina claims the prize. However, a press conference identifying the Lexington, S.C., winner is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET Thursday, NBC News reports.

Winning a Powerball jackpot is no easy task. According to CNN, players had a better chance of being struck by lightning or attacked by a shark than winning the $400 million prize; the odds of winning a Powerball drawing are 1 in 175 million.

Wednesday’s $400 million Powerball jackpot amounts to the fourth-largest prize in the history of the U.S. lottery, CNN reports. The game’s biggest prize, a $590.5 million jackpot, was awarded to Gloria C. MacKenzie, an 84-year-old woman from Zephyrhills, Fla.
