If you love tea, you've probably tried chai tea by now. If you haven't, it's basically a spicy, sweet, and fragrant tea that combines a variety of popular spices like ginger, cardamom, cloves, black pepper, star anise, peppercorns, and cinnamon.

While regular tea is usually brewed with water, chai tea is typically brewed with water and milk, which contributes to its distinct taste.

What are the Health Benefits of Chai Tea?

It may help control blood sugar.

Both cinnamon and ginger are known to help control blood sugar, and chai tea has both of these ingredients in it. Studies show that cinnamon may prevent insulin resistance which could, in turn, lower blood sugar levels. A study also shows that 2g of ginger powder a day may help lower blood sugar levels by up to 12 percent in people suffering from type 2 diabetes. It would be best to make your chai tea at home, though, since in-store versions sometimes tend to be heavily sweetened with sugar.

It may help reduce nausea.

Ginger, which is found in chai tea, is also known to help reduce nausea, particularly in pregnant women with a dose of 1.1g to 1.5g a day.

It may help improve digestion.

On that note, chai tea also consists of other ingredients - cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon - which have antibacterial properties that may help improve digestion when bacterial infections occur.

It may help reduce cholesterol levels.

Since chai tea has cinnamon in it, it may help reduce cholesterol levels. Studies show that 120mg of cinnamon per day could reduce cholesterol levels by up to 30 percent.

It may help with weight loss.

As mentioned earlier, unlike other types of tea, chai tea is typically brewed with water and milk instead of just water. A lot of the time, the milk used is soy milk or cow's milk, both of which are filled with protein. Protein is generally known to help you feel satiated for longer and can thus help curb your appetite so you don't feel hungry all the time.

By drinking chai tea in the morning, you could therefore reduce your hunger pangs and stop yourself from eating too much during the day. You could also opt to have a cup in the middle of the day when you feel the hunger pangs strike.
