A 9-month-old baby was tragically killed, and her grandmother injured in an attack involving the family's pet dog at their Iowa home, the authorities said.

The police received a report about the dog attack and responded at around 7:22 a.m. Thursday to Scott Avenue in Waterloo, according to The Courier.

"Waterloo Patrol Officers and Waterloo Fire Rescue arrived on scene and located two victims that had been bitten by a dog, inside the house," the Waterloo Police Department said in a statement.

The infant baby girl was declared dead at the scene, while her 49-year-old grandmother was found with serious injuries. The woman was taken to Allen Hospital before being flown to the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City for further medical attention.

Her current condition was not clear.

Responding officers found the family's pet, described as a neutered male boxer-hound mix, on a three-season porch at the back of the house. Animal Control officers used a snare pole and managed to detain the dog without incident.

The canine was removed from the property and put down following the incident, the officials said. The remains were taken for testing to a veterinary lab at Iowa State University in Ames, KWWL reported.

The circumstances that led to the dog attack were unclear. The police also had not received any previous calls involving the pet.

"You could tell that dog was part of the family," said a person who is part of the investigation.

The infant's mother reportedly broke down in tears on the front lawn after discovering her baby's untimely death.

The identities of the infant and her grandmother were not immediately released.

"No names are being released pending notification of family members. This is an ongoing investigation," the police department added.

In an unrelated incident, a 12-year-old boy was mauled to death by a pack of strays in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The victim, identified as Ayaan, was playing outside with his friends when the stray dogs ran after him. The dogs pounced on him and attacked him after he fell to the ground. A passerby rescued the boy, but he later died of his injuries at the local hospital.
