Abigail Breslin recently revealed that she was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after being raped by a man she was in a relationship with.

Earlier this month, the actress admitted that she was sexually assaulted by someone from her past. At that time, she posted an infographic from Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) that detailed how many perpetrators are able to walk free from their deeds. Following the informative post, one critic slammed Breslin by saying that non-reported rape cases do not count. This led the actress to explain why she didn’t report the incident to authorities.

In her lengthy post, the “Scream Queens” star said that she did not reach out to authorities because she was in complete shock and denial of what happened. The 21-year-old added that she did not want to look like a “victim” and decided to just go on with her life as though nothing happened. Additionally, Breslin said that she was worried that no one would believe her since she and the guy were in a relationship.

“I also feared that if my case didn’t lead anywhere, he would still find out and would hurt me even more. Thirdly, I knew how hurt my friends and family would be after finding out, and I didn’t want to put them through that,” she concluded.

Meanwhile, Breslin was diagnosed with PTSD over a year ago. Since the incident, she has already made a lot of progress. However, the “Little Miss Sunshine” lead star also confirmed that she still has flashbacks and nightmares from the night that the incident occurred.

More directly, she told the commenter, “To say that reported rapes are the only rapes that count contributes to the ideology that survivors or unreported rape don’t matter. It’s unfair, untrue, and unhelpful,” she wrote.
