Academy Award winners Kate Winslet, 34, and her husband director Sam Mendes, 44 have separated after nearly seven years of marriage, their law firm said in a statement Monday.

Kate and Sam are saddened to announce that they separated earlier this year. The split is entirely amicable and is by mutual agreement, Schillings, the British firm that represents them said.

Winslet and Mendes are fully committed to the future joint parenting of their children, the statement said.

The British couple married in May 2003. They have a 6-year-old son named Joe. Winslet has a 9-year-old daughter, Mia, with her previous husband Jim Threapleton.

Winslet rose to stardom after taking a role in James Cameron's Titanic alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, one of the top grossing movies of all time. She won an Academy Award for Best Actress in 2009 for The Reader.

Mendes won an Oscar for his film American Beauty in 1999. He also directed Revolutionary Road in 2008 and Road to Perdition, in 2002.
