Afghans rioted in the city of Mazar-i-Sharif on Friday. A 2,000-strong crowd attacked UN guards at a compound and seized their weapons. They then stormed the compound and killed several UN workers. At least 8 international personnel – both guards and UN workers – have been killed.

The deceased individuals – two of them killed by beheading – were from Nepal, Romania, Sweden, and Norway. One of them was a woman.

The justification for the riots and killing given was the burning of the Koran by Florida pastor Terry Jones. On March 20, Jones held a “trial” on the Koran and judged it to be “guilty.” He then burned the book.
