“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” added some tortured romance to the Inhuman drama last week. May’s (Ming-Na Wen) ex-husband Andrew (Blair Underwood) was revealed to be Lash (Matthew Willig). She chose to keep the murderous Inhuman in stasis gel, essentially putting him in a coma, until the ATCU finds a cure for Inhumans. While putting her husband in a box and keeping him unconscious doesn’t seem like a great relationship move, Wen said it’s actually the only choice that keeps hope alive for the couple.

“No, not at all!” the actress told Hypable when asked if May has given up on her ex. “Because in the end, when she asks Daisy [Chloe Bennet] what she thought about the whole [thing with] keeping them in stasis, that was her sense of hope -- that maybe they will find a cure, and she will have her Andrew back. So she is keeping that hope alive, and I think that’s why she made that decision, as hard as it was, because it was either that or putting him down.”

Even though Andrew is still alive, the fact that May realized she was willing to kill him if necessary will affect her for a long time, according to executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen. “She went on vacation trying to figure out if she can live a life outside of S.H.I.E.L.D., and I think her taking those shots at Andrew was her making the choice that she can’t,” Tancharoen told Entertainment Weekly. “She’s willing to shoot the man that she loves because she’s protecting the innocent. I don’t know how she’s going to be after that.”

While May and Andrew will have to wait to discover if they can ever be together again, two other characters are finally giving a relationship a shot. In episode 8, Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) will finally move forward in their romance. “Their relationship will visibly change forever,” executive producer Jed Whedon told EW of Tuesday’s episode.

Of course, that won’t be the easiest transition. After all, they’re trying to save Simmons’ ex-boyfriend Will (Dillon Casey), and Fitz might finally reveal his concerns. “This is the episode where they both will express their feelings finally about everything that’s gone down,” he added.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 3 airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST on ABC.
