A new rumor is circulating that game developer Creative Assembly might finally begin development on the sequel to “Alien: Isolation.” The team behind the game just finished its work on “Halo Wars 2,” and will now be able to work on the new project.

Creative Assembly is currently expanding with its recent acquisition of Crytek Black Sea, now known as Creative Assembly Sofia. With the acquisition, it is believed that the game developer now has the capacity to return to the “Alien” franchise. The company also wrapping up work on “Halo Wars 2” which suggests that it is now free to work on the sequel.

The rumor of “Alien: Isolation 2” first sparked from a quote discovered in the rumor section of next month’s Official PlayStation Magazine (issue #135). “Our sources tell us that after work is finished on ‘Halo Wars 2,’ a new ‘Alien’ game may start development over at ‘Alien Isolation’ dev, Creative Assembly,” the quote said, as shared by PlayStation Universe.

It didn’t specifically say that the team was working on the sequel to 2014’s “Alien: Isolation,” only that a new game based on the film franchise might soon be in development. Creative Assembly studio director Tim Heaton did say back in September 2015 that a sequel to the game was “not out of the question.”

Sega, game publisher and owner of CA, has also expressed interest in a sequel, but only if the game was profitable. “Alien: Isolation” was highly praised by fans and critics, but it wasn’t able to meet Sega’s expectations. It sold 2.1 million units in the United States and Europe as of March 2015.

The idea of a sequel has been tossed around since then, but Sega hasn’t really committed to doing it. If Sega and CA are indeed planning on making a new “Alien” game, it’s possible that it might not even be a sequel to “Isolation.”
