Apple Inc. said Wednesday that it sold 270,000 iphones on the first weekend it was available for sale, a figure on the lower end of some initial estimates.

The initial sales figure accounted for the last 30 hours at the end of its third fiscal quarter beginning on June 29.

Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) also said it hopes to sell 1 million iPhones by the end of the fourth quarter. It also reiterated its goal to sell 10 million units in by the end of 2008.

The announcement came during the conference call where it announced record third fiscal quarter profits of $818 million.

Yesterday, AT&T said that 146,000 iPhones were activated in the first two days of iPhone sales.

Some analysts had estimated sales above 500,000 units.
