Earth has been shifted on its axis by almost 4 inches (10 centimeters) during the Japan earthquake, and according to some reports, the cataclysmic incident has a moon connection.

Scientists at the Sternberg Institute of Astronomy in Russia have said Earth's axis shifted because Earth had come close to the moon.

Parts of the Earth’s surface rise under the gravitational attraction of the Moon and the Sun, causing fluctuations in ocean waters, the Voice of Russia quoted the scientists as saying.

They said it's too early too say the impact of this phenomenon in the future. Even before the quake happened rumors were rife on the Internet that something devastating was about to happen around this date. ...be forewarned. Something BIG could happen on or around this date (plus or minus three days is my guess), a member of the Acuweather Facebook fan page wrote.

The argument went like this: Around the time the last extreme super moon happened, which was January 10, 2005, there indeed was a terrible natural disaster. The devastating pacific tsunami which gobbled up parts of Indonesia and other pacific rim countries and killed hundreds of thousands, happened two weeks before the Supermoon event.

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy said the Japanese quake happened when a huge tectonic plate shift shook up Earth's crust, leaving a rupture 250 miles long and 100 miles wide.

The tectonic plates underlying the notoriously seismic incident-prone Pacific 'ring of fire' slipped more than 18 meters, a USGS geophysicist has said.

More than 90 percent of all earthquakes in the world happen in the Pacific Ring of Fire area which stretches from New Zealand to the American west coast.

The Japan quake and tsunami came weeks after the massive earthquake in New Zealand which killed scores of people and another one in China in recent days.

According to astrologers the full moon at lunar perigee, or the 'Supermoon', which is slated to take place on March 19, can wreak havoc on Earth.
