Memphis-area residents were warned on Saturday that the Mississippi River was gradually starting to wrap its arms around the city and rise to record levels, Reuters reported.

Another 200 homeowners in the Memphis area, in the U.S. state of Tennessee, were warned on Sunday that they are at risk of dangerous flooding as the region braces for the highest Mississippi River crest since 1937.

The swollen Mississippi River swallowed up farmland and threatened river towns as record amounts of water tested a network of levees and reservoirs built since deadly floods in the last century, Emergency officials said.
