02 July 2009 @ 10:33 pm ET

A yellow-white, 9 feet Burmese pet python on Thursday reportedly wrapped itself on a 2 year-old baby and crushed her to death at Oxford, Florida home.

It had escaped from a glass aquarium in the living room just after midnight Wednesday, The owner put it in a bag and returned it back, according to the report. Then, later in the early morning the snake owner discovered that the snake was again out of its case and made its way into the child's crib.

"Our stupid snake got out in the middle of the night and strangled her," Charles Jason Darnell, 32, the boyfriend of the child's mother and snake's owner said.

"He got a knife and started stabbing the snake but it slipped away so fast under a dresser," the investigator said. But the 2 year-old Shaiunna Hare, was already dead when deputies arrived at the home about 10 a.m

Mr Darnell did not have a permit for the snake According to BBC reports. It might face child endangerment or other charges.

Burmese python usually eat their prey alive, and could live over 30 years. It can also reach the length of 26 feet and weigh over 200 lbs.

This was so tragic, but Andrea is right, the snake was just doing what is natural. You shouldn't have a snake in the house with small children. It really is that simple.

Stupid snake. Should have rather gone for the owner than the poor little girl . The story could have been much better as " Python killed owner".

In nigeria we dont counted snake as a pet .we were trained to belief that all snakes are dangerous stupid snake supposed to kill all of them as a lesson for others GOVT SUPPOSED NOT TO ALLOWED SNAKES AS A PET

As dangerous as snake. Snake is pecieved as an evil one, a devil per say. If one keeps it in his home as a pet, the person is petting a demon, a subbttle and a corney and unreliable animal. What does a snake do at home. In Nigeria, no snake is innocent. We must kill them for peace to reign at the scene. If Oyibo like keeping snakes, you can come to Nigeria and get rid of our snakes, we would not mind. They can be extinct here because they are not doing any good job for us. It is good time to abolish these harming perceptions. The innocent child just died because someone was happy looking at a snake in his house as a pet. What a pitty.

OK people, you can't have it both ways! Either animals should be held as responsible as humans are, for something like this, which also means they deserve the same rights as humans, OR they are only doing what they were created to do and the humans who kept the snake as a pet, should be punished for this childs death....NOT the snake! Snakes are NOT pets and the snake had already escaped once and returned to it's prison, then escaped again and killed the poor baby. Who should be punished???

I wonder why somebody can decide to keep a demon in his house in the name of a pet. Imagine inviting a devil into ones home. This couple should be punished severely for killing this innocent child. The demon should have killed that man instead of this child.

this is very cruel of that man, for using his money foolishly in bringing an evil into his home. it's so bad of him. Was it not money he used in bringing that evil one called snake to his home? why did he not use this money for something good? why did he use the little baby to sacrice for the devil? he deserved to be purshished so as to teach others like him a very good lesson

The man should be proscuted for child's murder. How can a normal man put snake in a leaving house. I think he should be tested for psychiatric problem.

i hate snakes. the mother of that child should be sent for treatment.

the only way they can blame snake is if it was not hungry but if it was hungry no one should do.

If it is not safe don't do it. Snakes are never friends and can not be friends. Any parent who pets a snake that finally their child, God can not forgive them. Under no condition pls do away with snakes they are bad from creation to this day, and what has happened can testify for it's self.

This is another example of exotic, read that wild animals, in a regular home situation. Some species should never, ever be allowed as pets. There are individuals who have undergone the training and have the skill to handle snakes and their argument is they should be allowed to keep them. Most of these argue that herpteologists (sp) are on the average more educated than your average pet owner and therefore are against banning. I do know this. A babe is dead. A reptile of a size to be a risk to that babe was in the house. Why? We know enough about the reptilian brain to seriously doubt that attachments to other species, in this case the mammal man). Over and over especially in the warmer states there are stories of missing small pets and the culprit someone's abandoned/or escaped constricting snake. If I even knew a neighbor had such a thing I would do all in my power to get it removed. Wild animals of this type are not pets. They never can be, I keep thinking of that little one being crushed and wondering where mommy was? why doesn't Mommy make the pain stop? Or at least the sorry ass man who brought the thing in in the first d...mn place, why wasn't he taking STRONG measures? He had no business bringing it in the house in the first place. May the Lord have mercy on your souls because we know the snake won't. Perhaps those people who are calling this snake a devil are correct. I know one thing it does what they do.

If I were the parents of the girl, I would have strangled the snake. I will arrest the owner of the snake and he will give reasons for keeping such snake in an unsafe place. Besides government of the country or state should search the mans house to see if there is more dangerous animals in there. Government should query the man for this. They should also provide a place safe for the training/keeping of such snakes/pythons.

O.K. Didn't the owner of the snake say it escaped earlier and he had to put it back in the aquarium. DAH DAH was he drunk or high on crack to think it won't escape again. They should put him in a small room and put about 4 big Burmese pythons (hungry ones) and let them KILL both the mother and boyfriend. Just stupid people............
