Queen Latifah, one of the many celebrities that paid tribute to Michael Jackson at the singer's public memorial at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Tuesday- said how much she loved and admired the King of Pop.

She then went on to read a poem that Maya Angelou wrote in tribute for the occasion called "We Had Him"

Read the beautiful poem below:

Beloveds, now we know that we know nothing, now that our bright and shining star can slip away from our fingertips like a puff of summer wind.

Without notice, our dear love can escape our doting embrace. Sing our songs among the stars and walk our dances across the face of the moon.

In the instant that Michael is gone, we know nothing. No clocks can tell time. No oceans can rush our tides with the abrupt absence of our treasure.

Though we are many, each of us is achingly alone, piercingly alone.

Only when we confess our confusion can we remember that he was a gift to us and we did have him.

He came to us from the creator, trailing creativity in abundance.

Despite the anguish, his life was sheathed in mother love, family love, and survived and did more than that.

He thrived with passion and compassion, humor and style. We had him whether we know who he was or did not know, he was ours and we were his.

We had him, beautiful, delighting our eyes.

His hat, aslant over his brow, and took a pose on his toes for all of us.

And we laughed and stomped our feet for him.

We were enchanted with his passion because he held nothing. He gave us all he had been given.

Today in Tokyo, beneath the Eiffel Tower, in Ghana's Black Star Square.

In Johannesburg and Pittsburgh, in Birmingham, Alabama, and Birmingham, England

We are missing Michael.

But we do know we had him, and we are the world.

What a beautiful sentiment. Maya Angelou's poem paints a thousand pictures. We did have him. Thank you for reminding us of what a gift we were truly given when Michael entered our world. I don't think any other words could have done him such justice. I feel that the world really is a darker place without our shining star. May he finally live as we would never let him. Peacefully.

Thank you, Michael.
You will be missed.

Rev Al sharpton, said some profound words, he said things in a way we have never thought of them that way, I was touched when he said to MJ's kids "nothing strange about your daddy,it was strange what he had to deal with"- i loved that. His daughter summed it all up, above all things, he was a dad, and a great one at that. My thoughts and prayers go out to his children, Michael, paris and "blanket'. may the good lord continue to bless you. Yes Maya, We did have him and what a wonderful gift he was, not just to his family, but all human kind.

Michael Jackson was one of the best artists of our time. He was an inspiration to us all and he will never be forgotten. No matter how bad the media portrayed him, we all know he was just an innocent lost child inside trying to break free from normality because he wanted to be different, original and unique. No one can hurt him now. He gave to the world with his charities and music and asked for nothing in return. He was the boy that didn't want to grow up. I feel honoured and privileged to have heard his music during my time and feel sorry for the next generation of people to grow up without getting the chance to watch a legend perform but can only log on to something like Youtube and watch his past performances while we grew up watching them LIVE. There will be no one as good, as great, as awesome as him.

Thank you Michael for sharing your talent. I still can't do the moonwalk but i'll never stop trying. Just like you.

What another beautiful poem by Maya Angelou! She's so eloquent isn't she? Plus this poem was just so fitting for what Michael meant to the world. I wish it didn't take death for the collective to appreciate certain individuals like Michael Jackson. I don't mean any blasphemy by saying this, but in so many ways MJ's story seems so similar to Jesus Christ. I couldn't help but keep thinking that he must've prayed to God to ask for forgiveness for all those who persecuted him while he was alive. "Forgive them Lord for they know not what they do." Why do we do the things we've done to our celebrities... it's so sad! I truly hope Michael was able to see the love and outpouring of appreciation that was shown at his Memorial from his place up above. He deserves at least that... to know his life was not in vain.

My mom always taught me that no one can beat God giving and to always be a blessing. I truly believe that is how Michael Jackson lived his life, be a blessing. He gave so freely and God blessed him so lovingly. Some can say what that want about this great man but only God can judge him. The things he had to endure he no longer has to because His Judge has greeted him and said, "Job well done". Maya has done it again and has put the world's emotions and sentiments in such form that speaks volumes of how much Michael will be missed.
RIP MJ

If ever a man was given a memorial fit for a king ~it was Michael, as he fully deserved. The accolades, the protectiveness, the loyalty, the out~pour of love, the defenses of him, the intense devotion had me crying from word one to the very end. I could not get a grip. I couldn't have planned any moment better myself. The emotion, the gifts of words offered, Maya Angelou's beautiful poem and depth of kindness and loyalty in having it presented on her behalf was so much more than I could endure, and I am NOT a crier.
I have grieved for this man for so so many years because of all he has endured and suffered being an abused child myself and full-well knowing the aftermath of that kind of childhood and now the man is where God intended, within the gates of total love and acceptance and freedom. I always wished he was my lil brother so I could be a part of his support system and someone to hug him and say to him "I understand, Mikey". I can clear a room with my opinion of people who beat and abuse a skinny lil boy like him, looking down on a tiny child with anger and ugliness and force as his father did. Shame on him! God don't like ugly, Joe Jackson and for you to have the egomania to believe Michael's accomplishments are yours, just know that the world is not on your side and our Lord will deal with you in days to come. How dare you raise a belt to someone so small. It totally disgusts me beyond words. Michael, you were the bigger man telling your father you forgive him but Lord only knows he didn't deserve it ~~OR YOU! All my heart felt love and appreciation for the 50 years God blessed us with you. I only wish I could have said all this to you in person and my biggest fear is that you didn't know all this about a world of people who loved you immensely.
You are an angel now. Fly happy and free, Mikey.

It has been three weeks and I am still heart-broken. If only you could have known how many people truly cared about you and loved you. Not everyone believes the trash that has been written and said about you. You truly are a special gift, blessed by God with immense talent and compassion. My heart aches for your pain and sadness in your life. It is unfortunate that it seems you were surrounded by people who did not really care about you and only took from you whatever they could. There are so many who would have freely surrounded you with love and support and maybe you would have been a little less lonely. I pray that you are with Jesus now where you are fully understood and loved unconditionally. Thank you for all you gave. I love you and miss you.

Maya Angelou's poem: "We Had Him" was so beautiful. Her poem relates a lot to Michael in real life. This poem has meaning with every single word. Michael made singing and dancing fun no matter how hard it was. Michael had lots of passion and even more compassion. In the part:”In the instant Michael is gone, we know nothing. No clocks can tell our time. No oceans can rush our tides with the abrupt absence of our treasure.” It has a lot of meaning because when Michael the shining star is gone, the whole world froze, the clocks stopped ticking and the Earth stopped rotating. Also in “walk our dances across the face of the moon” reminds me of his classic “moonwalk”. It’s true. Michael gave the world all of his talents in singing and dance. He kept nothing to himself.
One of his dances he dances on his toes and Maya knew that and took Michael’s performing life into her poem. This makes the poem like an autobiography and a poem of him.
His father isn’t Joe Jackson. His father is God. Michael was only raised by the Jackson’s but Maya knew that truly he is Michael God.
Even though some people truly adored Michael, he still left their loving care. That part was to me and maybe some others was the most meaningful part.
Even though Michael is gone his soul, spirit, music and passion lives forever. The newspaper reporters cannot say any horrible lies about him now because he is resting with the moon and the stars.
Michael was our gift. No one can replace this gift. Michael is something that comes only once in a lifetime. Even though we are many Maya made us remember that everyone can feel very lonely in this big world now.
In the last four sentences: “Today in Tokyo, beneath the Eiffel Tower, in Ghana’s Black Star Square…We are missing Michael. But we do know we had him and we are the world.” To me that just summarizes that everywhere in the world everyone is missing Michael. And, the world that Michael healed is missing him.
Long live your spirit Michael.
How Maya can think of this meaningful poem might always be a mystery to me.

Everything barb in #26 said is what I feel. I, too, am still heartbroken, and feel enormously sad that he was so lonely and sad and taken advantage of in his life. He was such a gift to us, and many of us humans exploited it, for which I am truly sorry. I am sure he knows, now that he walks with God, that he was so loved. That is all that gives me solace right now. Thank you Maya Angelou for your beautiful poem that was so perfect for Michael. And thank you Michael, I will love and miss you forever, and always remember.

God blessed him with the gift to heal the world via his talent to not only entertain but to take us on journey to a better place where we are united as one and nothing seperates us. Thats why to me he will always and yes always remain King of Pop. No matter where you go in the world, if its the richest or the poorest everyone knows Michael. No matter who you ask old or young everyone knows Michael. So thank you for blessing us with one of you're many angels on earth.
