Matt Bomer is a fan favorite to be cast in the "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie, but some critics are not convinced because the actor is gay.

According to a tweet from "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy author E.L. James, the film version of her books is far from casting, but that hasn't stopped fans from speculating about who will be playing their beloved characters.

Countless polls have been taken and articles written, and none have really gotten anyone closer to deciphering who will play the domineering role of the alluring Christian Grey. But one thing did become clear: While "White Collar" and "Magic Mike" actor Matt Bomer might be a favorite of some "Fifty Shades" fans, others are not sure if he will be able to pull off the role because of his sexuality.

Matt Bomer has never hid the fact that he is gay, but at an awards ceremony he inadvertently came out to the public by thanking his partner.

Though it should not have been a big deal since Bomer was never "in the closet" to begin with, the actor's "coming out" made headlines when he thanked his partner and publicist Simon Halls and three children, Kit, Walker and Henry, when he was honored at a Desert AIDS Fund event in Palm Springs, Calif., in February.

"I never really endeavored to hide anything," Bomer tells E! News. "But there were times I chose not to relegate my history to the back page of a magazine, which to me is sort of akin to putting your biography on a bathroom wall."

Bomer continued: "What we really have to do is stop the adjective before the job title -- whether it's 'black actor,' a 'gay actor' or 'anything actor. Everybody thinks that equality comes from identifying people, and that's not where equality comes from. Equality comes from treating everybody the same regardless of who they are. I hope the media and the press catches on to that because it's time to move out of 1992."

Bomer certainly doesn't seem to think that his personal life has anything to do with how well he can play a role, but what about "Fifty Shades" fans?

A faux-trailer for the movie was recently created by a fan of the series, Alex White, which portrayed Bomer as Christian Grey and Alexis Bledel as "innocent" sex goddess Anastasia Steele.

Do you think Bomer would be a perfect fit for Mr. Grey, regardless of being straight or gay? Take the poll.

If Matt Bomer were cast as Christian Grey, would it matter to you that he was gay in real life?
