As the “Beauty and the Beast” live-action film draws ever close to theaters, one man challenged the actor who will portray the film’s version of the character Gaston for the role. When Hugh Jackman appeared on “The Jonathan Ross Show” alongside “Beauty and the Beast” actor Luke Evans, the host thought it would be a good idea to make his guests sing one of the character’s most iconic numbers to see who is more worthy of the part.

For those who don’t know, Jackman played the role of Gaston in the original “Beauty and the Beast” live stage musical in 1995. As a result, the host believed it would be a good idea to put the new Gaston on the spot against the seasoned veteran. At the risk of building up too much dramatic tension, the bout ends with Jackman falling to his knee and praising the new blood for his performance. Evans was the first to ditch his lyrics sheet, although Jackman kept pace with his singing and performance the entire time.

As E! Online notes, the breakout star of the little sing-off ended up being neither of the two Gastons, but rather “Kingsman: The Secret Service” star Taron Egerton. The 26-year-old actor was also appearing on the late night host’s panel and joined in for the chorus of the song. However, in the video below, he surprises everyone with an unexpected set of pipes when the rest of the group is having trouble remembering how the song begins.

Sadly, not much is known about the live-action “Beauty and the Beast” remake at this time as Disney and the producers are keeping all of the information under a tight lock and key. What we do know is that it is currently scheduled for a March 17, 2017 release date and that it will star some A-list actors in iconic roles. Emma Watson stars as Belle and is joined by Ewan McGregor as Lumiere, Dan Stevens as Beast and Ian McKellen as Cogsworth.
