A shooting incident in Virginia's Bristol late Thursday night left two people injured with gunshot wounds.

The Virginia Police Department officers arrived at a residence on Harvey Lane after receiving calls about a shooting incident, and found two wounded people.

Capt. Maynard Ratcliff said he believes the two victims were targeted. However, before officers arrived, the suspect had escaped the scene.

"We have two subjects that have been shot and we don't know what their condition is at this time," Capt. Ratcliff said, according to WCYB. "I know they've been taken to the hospital and we don't have any idea on their condition at this time. So, it's an ongoing investigation and we'll be releasing more information as it becomes available and if we can release it without jeopardizing our investigation."

The police urged people living in the area to lock their doors and shelter in place amid the ongoing investigation.

The identities of the victims and their current condition were not immediately known.

This is a developing story.
