Bruno Mars recently opened up about his mom Bernadette Hernandez’s death.

In an interview with Latina magazine, the “24K Magic” singer shared that it was so difficult to lose his mom. “My life has changed. She’s more than my music. If I could trade music to have her back, I would. I always hear her say, ‘Keep going and keep doing it,’” he said. The half-Filipino singer added that his mom taught him the importance of loving and treating women right so when his mom passed away, he felt like a part of him died with her.

Hernandez passed away in 2003 at the age of 55 and is survived by her six children. Following her death, Mars and his entire family realized the importance of loving each other and spending time with each other as much as they can. “You just gotta know that she’s with me everywhere I go. It’s something that you can’t imagine – the pain and the things that you keep going back to. I wish I would’ve done this or said this. You just have to see life differently. It shows you the real importance of life. Nothing else matters in this world but family and your loved ones,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mars’ musicality came from his father, who he also spoke very highly of. He also clarified that there’s no truth to the rumors that claimed he’s ashamed of his ethnicity because he decided to change his name to Bruno Mars instead of sticking to his birth name, Peter Hernandez. “My dad nicknamed me Bruno since I was 2 years old. The real story is, I was going to go by Bruno. Mars just kind of came joking around because that sounds bigger than life. That was it, as simple as that,” he said.
