A car was completely sliced in half after a deadly accident in New York on Monday morning.

Four 18-year-old passengers were killed in the crash that happened on the Long Island parkway. Joseph Beer, the 17-year-old driver from Queens, who had a learner's permit, was taken to a hospital, New York State Police said.

The accident happened around 4 a.m. after the car smashed into some trees along the parkway, resulting in closure of the roadway for five hours on Columbus Day. Neighbors described the accident as “a loud boom,” with glass, debris of car parts and personal items strewn near the wreckage, the Associated Press reported.

Police said Beer failed to “negotiate a curve in the road” and crashed into the trees. The names of the four teenage passengers, who were thrown from the vehicle, have not been released.

The parkway was reopened shortly before 10 a.m.
