The Super Bowl 2023 matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles is one that has rarely been seen in recent history. The two teams have only gone head-to-head once in the last four seasons, though Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts were both under center for the game.

Mahomes won the matchup against Hurts. The Chiefs beat the Eagles, 42-30, at Lincoln Financial Field in Week 4 of the 2021 season.

The Eagles took a 10-7 into the second quarter after Hurts connected with Dallas Goedert on a three-yard touchdown pass. Mahomes threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill with 9:25 remaining in the second quarter that put Kansas City up for good.

Darrel Williams' one-yard touchdown run with 51 seconds left in the third quarter put the Chiefs up 28-16, giving Kansas City its first two-possession lead. Mahomes threw a pair of touchdown passes in the final half of the fourth quarter, ultimately making it a comfortable victory for the Chiefs.

It was a dominant offensive performance for the Chiefs, which totaled 471 yards on 7.5 yards per play. Mahomes was too much for the Eagles, completing 24 of his 30 attempts for 278 yards and five touchdowns. An interception was the only blemish on Mahomes' stat sheet.

Hurts finished with big numbers, throwing for 387 yards and two touchdowns. The Eagles quarterback added 47 yards on eight rushing attempts.

This year's versions of the Chiefs and Eagles are different from the teams that faced off in Philadelphia 16 months ago.

The Eagles have improved on both sides of the ball. Hurts has gone from an average quarterback to an MVP-caliber player. After finishing second-to-last with 29 sacks a season ago, the Eagles led all teams with 70 regular-season sacks.

Mahomes was only sacked once in a five-touchdown performance over the Eagles. Three of those scores were reeled in by Tyreek Hill, who finished the contest with 11 receptions for 186 yards. Hill, of course, is no longer on the Chiefs. Three Chiefs wide receivers suffered injuries in the AFC Championship Game.

Travis Kelce had just four catches for 23 yards against the Eagles. Much has been made about Kelce going head-to-head with his brother, Eagles center Jason Kelce.

The Eagles went 3-0 against the Chiefs from 2001-2009. Since 2013, Kansas City is 3-0 against Philadelphia.

Andy Reid has been the winning head coach in all six of those games.
