Chinese police detained high-profile venture capitalist Wang Gongquan on Friday in their latest effort to crack down on dissent in the country, according to a news report.

The South China Morning Post reported that Wang was to be questioned on suspicion "of gathering a crowd to disturb order in public places." The report said that's the same reason the police gave when they detained Wang's close friend Xu Zhiyong, who founded the dissident organization New Citizen Movement.

Xu has been in custody since July, the newspaper reported.
