Actor Chris Klein, who played the sensitive and strapping Oz in the American Pie movies, admit that alcoholism almost cost him his life.

It got to the point where I was a fragile shadow of the young man that came into this business, the actor told People magazine in an interview. Today, I'm the luckiest guy alive.

The actor was slapped with DUI charges in 2005. He was pulled over in February of that year by police, who discovered that the actor's alcohol level was more than double the legal limit, People reported. Another blow that year would be the end of his five-year relationship with actress Katie Holmes. The two had been engaged.

Alcoholism would prove to still be a problem five years later, prompting the actor to check into rehab.

After recent events, Chris was forced to take a clear look at a problem he has been trying to deal with himself for years, his representative told People. He understands now that he cannot beat this disease alone. He thanks everyone for their support as he takes all the necessary steps to deal with his addiction and asks for privacy while doing so.

He also served a four-day jail sentence in 2010.

The actor recently celebrated his 33rd birthday.

I would have died, and I think about that every single day, he told People.

He will reprise his role as Oz in the latest American Pie film American Reunion. Klein recently told the Huffington Post that he wasn't offered a role in American Wedding, hence his absence.

Unfortunately, that was a creative decision made way above my pay grade, he said, adding that he would have joined had he been asked.

American Reunion -- where Klein will reunite with his American Pie costars after 11 years -- hits theaters on April 6.
