Rapper Kanye West was caught smiling when he went to receive his honorary degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago on May 10. For the commencement, the 37-year-old was dressed in a formal graduation cap and gown. Kim Kardashian’s husband was greeted with laughter and appreciation as he took to the stage to deliver his speech to students and graduating artists, US Weekly reported.

“George Bush has some very cool self-portraits,” West said, drawing a big laugh from the audience. West delivered a brief speech instead of opting for a longer, more traditional commencement day address. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that he felt nervous on the occasion.

Kanye’s graduation was a fulfillment of the promise he made to his mother, Donda West, in his 2005 song, “Hey Mama.” The rapper’s mother died unexpectedly in 2007. He dropped out of Chicago’s Academy of Art and then Chicago State after one semester and titled his debut album “The College Dropout.” The night before, West gave an artist talk to students and faculty.

His wife Kim Kardashian and daughter North West did not attend the ceremony. But Kim took to Twitter and congratulated her husband on his big achievement. “Dr. Kanye West!!!!!!! I’m so proud of you baby & I know your mom would be so proud too!!!!” she captioned a photo of Kanye smiling with the graduation robe. The reality television star put a graduation cap emoji at the end of the caption. Kim was away in Brazil on business. Many fans of the rapper also took to social media to share photos and videos of Kanye’s speech, which included talk about his career as an artist.
